Welcome home….. ?
August 26, 2008 at 8:44 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 CommentHey guys,
The ones who know me shouldn’t be too surprised by the fact that my last post is already quite old.But coming home after being a year abroad isn’t the same than coming home from vacation, although both is weird to me now.Now that it’s almost 2 months that I’m back,a lot of things have happened,I met most of my friends again,I’ve chosen my courses for my last two years in school,I’ve gone for my driving license,I’ve been on vacation(just came back yesterday) and today I’ve started a “PowerMaths” course to catch up with the stuff I missed in school last year.
I could write a post of 1000 words each about every topic I’ve mentioned but instead I’d like to mix everything within one post.
The gap wasn’t only in my blog, but also in my life, especially the brain.Don’t get me wrong but readjusting to a society you’ve been brought up in but which looks so weird now isn’t easy. One week after my arrival I went to a wedding in Bavaria, where I was greated with a marching band and a “white-sausage-breakfast” before being asked which kinda sausage I want using a deep bavarian accent. My driving teacher freaked out when I drove on the wrong site of the road for about 100 meteres without feeling bad.My so called mother tongue twisted my tongue more than it came out of it. Dresscodes of some people seemed quite weird and everytime I saw a girl wearing scarf or an Indian,Chinese or other Asian-looking guy a huge wave of emotions and memories swapped over me.
As expected time made me realise how much I miss the country which I called home for one year and most of all my (host)family, which absence drilled a big hole in my life and my heart.
For some of you this lines may sound “so sweet” that you can put it on your bread and eat it or fix your shoe from pasar malam with it,but I do mean it,otherwise I wouldn’t sit here having a cold, missing one of the greatest German comedian’s show and writing this.
The tracking result of my 2 parcels send by ship reminds me of the Malaysian way of life and the 18 kg at my family’s house still haven’t been send, following the motto relax lah ![]()
My berlin trip with some friends of mine was fun and an adventure and the holiday in France with my family was also great.Since I seem to be magnetic to problems with my baggage,AirFrance didn’t manage to check my bag through on both flights and the lady at the check-in in Bordeaux didn’t even notice me.Luckily I was chosen as a “lucky passenger” and had to fill out a form a form asking me about my opinion.
“O happy day” and “mauvaise” (worst mark) for the “friendliness of the check-in personnel. ![]()
Staying close to Bordeaux, enjoying French food and wine(my secret weapon to reactivate my french) I had to make an effort to meat Claire and…. it worked out.. we met in the beautiful ( and expensive) Bordeaux, had a coffee and tested whether claire still speaks English or not.
After coming home another surprise awaited me:
Letters,quite a number..for me!!
I’m not the kind of guy who gets lots of letters,I rather get the electronic version offering me special equipment for the world’s most exquisite fruit.Anyway some AFS-ers have thought of me,the ones in the German offices, some fellows from France and Germany and even a very thoughtful card from Penang, thanks a lot guys, the one from MAS arrived too early for my BD btw ![]()
So far so good,I’m out of ideas now,I’ll try to update you more often and upload some pics.(of me cooking Malaysian food… tapi sekejap ahhh saya busy lah!! )
To all my Muslim friends down there in Malaysia and any others should you read this:
I wish you all the best for Ramadan, strength and an early “buka puasa”.
Assalammualaikum wbt.
Yours
Manuel
P.S Should any of you be in Beijing this October, drop me a line I’ll be there and check out the Malaysian food there
GoKart4Peace and Speech in Chinese
June 30, 2008 at 1:29 am | Posted in Englisch/English/Bahasa Inggeris, June 2008 | 3 CommentsGuys,guys,guys,the number 6 is a magical number:
Pronounced in German it can be considered as sexual harrasement, added up three times in a row it’s the number of the beast,..for me it’s the number of days remaining until I’m flying back home.
People keep on asking me:
“So when are you going back?”
“In 14 days.”
“Oh you’re counting already?” (Smile on the face)
YES I am and NO I am not.
It will make you happy to know that the GoKart event organised by my chapter(the only funciton during my whole year I guess) made me think about other things than going back.
Since I’m a good AFS-student I didn’t drive the GoKart,I also didn’t manage to waive the flags as I hoped to do but nevermind at least I got to see all my AFS-buddies and the opportunity to reduce my sleeping hours from 13 to 6 per night.
Afterwards I chilled out at my chapterleader’s place, makan, talked about the good old times and dreamed of my Farewell dinner.
Since the other girl in my chapter left on Early Return under mysterious circumstances the dinner would be exclusively for me. ![]()
Well, the weddingdinner I attended later that day was like most of the other countless weddings I’ve attended before:
Getting ready and going to/finding the place took us longer than the actual dinner.
However I will remember it as the only Malay wedding the emcee spoke english at.
Yesterday(Sunday) my family and I went to a waterpark, somewhere near Jln Klang Lama to attend a function.Guess what?
The same uncle who sold the “all-in-one medicine” at our house the other day was the one getting an award as a “Diamond director” at the theme park today.
Luckily I only had to attend 4 out of the 8 hours function and could spend some times in the park together with my brothers.
The function itself was kinda weird:
Not only that I didn’t understand most of the speeches and live performed songs(probably due to the fact that they were in Mandarin) but the people around me acted more like as if the would go for a ver.di demonstration than for an award-giving ceremony.
Blowing whistles and screaming like at a Backstreet boys concert I wondered:
“Who are this people and what did they smoke?”
Nevertheless,I looked on the positive site, learned about how chinese people conduct ceremonies and how to become rich with a certain company within one year.
Right now I’m on a secret mission, more about it in the next post.
So far:
Gong xi!
In diesem Sinne:
Go Schweini go!

June 25, 2008 at 12:22 am | Posted in Englisch/English/Bahasa Inggeris, June 2008, Uncategorized | 4 CommentsGuys,I’m gonna make it short:
I’m confused.
I don’t know what to think,I’m leaving Malaysia in less than 2 weeks for my so called home country. But is it still my home country?I’ve been away for so long, have lived with Asian people,I’ve adopted to their lifestyle, their food, their religion, learned how to speak their language.
Will I be able to switch back to “my” culture just like switching the light on and off? I don’t think so.It’s gonna be a long and probably paintful progress, but one thing for sure:
It’s worth the pain you’re going through, that’s one of the things I’ve learned here.
I’m going to leave lots of things behind:
Friends,family,memories,habits,things that I can’t take home because they’re too heavy,…
I am looking forward going back to Germany, but on the other hand I’m also very sad to leave Malaysia,my second home.
I know it sounds very confusing, but that’s what I am right now:
confused!
Should there be amy changes in my mindset I’ll let you know
Till then

Stimmungsbild
June 25, 2008 at 12:12 am | Posted in June 2008, Uncategorized | 1 CommentWie versprochen hier nun also mein aktuelles Stimmungsbild/Einblick in meine Gefuehlswelt.
SuperGT Sepang Racing Circuit
June 24, 2008 at 11:53 pm | Posted in Englisch/English/Bahasa Inggeris, June 2008 | Leave a commentSince I’ve missed the Formula1 in March,I took up the chance to get to see at least the circuit in Sepang.Compared to back home the prices are quite cheap for SuperGT and still reasonable for Formula1,so I booked 3 tickets for the Race last weekend.More asleep than awake my brother,my friend and I arrived at 10 am to block our seats since it was free seating.Surprisingly we got seats right at the Start-Finish Line, where we also had a nice view of the Boxes. The next few hours we spent watching different kind of races,Ashton Martin Cup,Formula3,…and finally at 4 pm the Start of the SuperGT.Having good seats we also enjoyed watching the cars getting in position since the numberplates for the cars were presented by Japanese Models who wore……… Summer cloth.
Unfortunatly we forgot ear plugs, which made us use our hands to cover our ears since the cars were very loud, especially the F3s.
Well overall, the day was quite nice,we got to see lots of nice cars and hot chicks, but the fact that there was no programm besides of the races like performances by bands or something like that and the food was expensive, little and not nice brought our mood down a bit.
Nevermind,I’ve been to the circuit,I know what it’s like now and can treasure another experience in Malaysia.
German Embassy
June 24, 2008 at 11:36 pm | Posted in Englisch/English/Bahasa Inggeris, March 2008 | Leave a comment9th of March
What exactly is an embassy? What do the people do there? Is it the building you can jump into to be safe if you are threatened by someone because it is a political Specialzone?
With this questions stuck in my head I made my way to the German Embassy in KL , which was surprisingly organized by AFS Malaysia. Once I reached Ampang Park LRT Station I wasn’t quite sure where to go since it was my first time to the diplomatic part of KL where there were tall office buildings everywhere. After asking around I finally met up with the other German students, out of which I haven’t seen some for a very long time. Beeing Germans, we were relatively punctual, too punctual actually since we were asked to be there at 10,although the actual meeting started at 11.Once again, an information being spread incorrectly and way too late.
Anyways, once we had registered at the front desk we took the elevator up to the 26th floor and entered the embassy. The security was quite tight but luckily we managed to get in without being x-rayed.
After a very theoretical, glued-to-facts-based opening speech by the Vice-ambassador we were left with Dr. Radtke, the head of the cultural department who was supposed to give us “further info”. Most of us were already counting the sheep at that time being told for quite a while how many Billions of Ringgit Trade Exchange Malaysia and Germany had last year.
Luckily the conversation that followed was more interactive, we were interviewed about our experience in Malaysia and also tried to submit some AFS-Ideas. The people there didn’t really seem to know anything about AFS so we had to start from the real basics, which were presented by our National Director Atty Sulaiman.
Some of us were shocked by the fact that we were attending a function without makan dan minum (food and drinks) which is basically impossible in Malaysia. The Coke bottles on the table that were filled with water also looked quite weird and displaced. I didn’t see the sticker ‘For illustration purposes only” but they must have hidden it somewhere. Charlotte was hoping to get to eat some German bread, but unluckily the bread the embassy orders once a week from an Austrian Bakery in KL already seemed to be finished up. Since the ambassador was not in and there was nothing else to do we were given a short tour through the premises. To be honest: It was nothing special, just like any other office, only the fact that every Roominfo was written in German and the people working were mainly blonde made it a bit special. As you can see on the photographs he has a very nice chair with a beautiful view of KLCC just by looking out of the window.
Well, that was basically our visit to the Embassy, after which we still lepak-lepak (hang around) in KL. For all of us it was not that special and unique as we expected it to be,since it was basically just a German office/ Rathaus in a foreign country. So especially the people who had traveled quite far like Luise from Johor (state neighbouring Singapore) and Charlotte from Kuantan.(Eastcoast)
A few hours later one of the worst things that can happen to you in KL happened to me:
I had to take the last train, since I’ve just missed the train before. The thing is you could write an whole encyclopedia about the Malaysian Railroadcompany KTM,whereby ¾ of the book would be about service or better to say ways to improve it.
Nevertheless after a day in KL which I haven’t been to for a while, I finally got a change to read the book about 50 years of German-Malaysian relations we were given at the embassy.
Now most of my questions I was asking myself before leaving for the embassy were answered and I got an idea what it’s like being a diplomat and an ambassador of Germany.

Penang-Here I am once again
June 24, 2008 at 8:21 pm | Posted in Englisch/English/Bahasa Inggeris, June 2008 | 1 CommentPenang, one of my favorite places in Malaysia has me back,at least for a while. After my Farewell in Ipoh I went there straight so that I could make the most out of my stay there. On my first day there I went to see the newly renovated Snake Temple which is said to be crowded by stoned snakes.Well, there were snakes, they looked fake though,so a plate saying “The snakes are real. Please don’t touch” was put right next to it.The amount of boxes with stuff that has been moved recently was higher than the one of snakes I guess.I was quite disappointed since the reason I went to see this temple although I’ve seen so many before were the snakes. Anyways my plan for this day was to circle the island once,so my friend and I went further down to “balik pulau” ( “the back of the island” ) where we were greeted with a amazing view of the kampung part of Penang and even Indonesia on the horizon. After chilling out on the beach for a while and buying some fresh fish on a kampung market, we went for a curvy ride with one of the famous crazy Rapid Penang drivers to Batu Ferringhi. Since we were not willing to buy overprized, non-delicious food in the tourist area we went to a night market and got ourselves one big bag full of local dishes.Once we reached the Batu Ferringhi beach,we had our dinner and enjoyed the gorgeous sun set while horses, jet ski and other creatures passed by.Although I enjoyed this atmosphere with the wrong gender it was still nice to watch
There are a few things you have to do when you’re in Penang, one of them go to the Batu Ferringhi Night Market and bargain your a%& off. That’s what I did and unlike the last time I went there I didn’t need any assistant translator this time to get lower prizes.I seemed to be so good that one tourist complained: “Why do you only serve him?” Well, the fact that I caught up Malay in the last few months seemed to finally pay off.
After spending several hundred Ringgit that night,I had to buy a huge back pack to carry all the stuff home ^^
The next day,Tuesday the third of June, we decided to visit Penang Hill, which offers a great view of Penang after taking a cable car for 20 minutes.Of course we did not take the cable car but climbed the hill up instead.According to my Guidebook it should take between 2-4 hours to reach the summit, depending on your level of fitness. After climbing for 1 hour in the jungle I already regretted every single gram I carried up for no reason.
We reached the summit after about 3 hours, but where the fish was the cable car that was supposed to be there? All we found was the ruin of a house and 3 arrows all pointing in different directions. What happened?Did we really climb up the wrong hill? Following the sound of an engine we took a path down and after a while we reached a road,a toilet and a resting area. Civilization!!! And the best thing….the engine we heard was the one of a McD motorcycle who was about to deliver some stuff to the people on the hill.Isn’t it funny? When you don’t need this guys they’re there.
We rested for a while and after having checked out the area we were sure that the hill we went up was definitely not Penang Hill and that we were about to have still a long journey ahead of us.I’m going to shorten it up a bit here, since the next 2 hours consisted basically of sweating, walking and hoping to reach the summit soon. On the way up we were greated what we came for:
A fantastic view over Penang, old houses in British Style,a Buddhist Temple, flower farms and the cable car you passed by while the passengers were looking at us and probably asking themselves what we were doing here.
After 5 hours of natural shower,no water for most of the time and lot of optimism we finally reached the summit. Lying down on a covered bench and enjoying the view while having a cold drink was the best thing we could do.As we woke up after our nap, we decided to go down,by cable car this time.We made our way to town, hanged around a bit there before going back home and watching EURO.
The next day we went to the KekLokSi Temple, which is also about to get renovated and dived into the chinese culture. It was pretty cool seeing all the Buddha stuff again, since this one was quite different from the other temples I’ve seen before,so check out the pics.As I’ve mentioned in my last post about Penang, donation plays a big role in Buddhism. This time I gave way to my chinese side and also donated some money,of course for a special reason and with getting something back. Since the statue on top of the hill is going to be covered with a roof I purchased one of the tiles with my name written on it.Once again we went to chill out in town and since it was my last night in Penang,I invited my hosts to my favourite mamak stall, which I’ve eaten at a number of times before during my stay here.
To finish it all off,we took the ferry to the mainland, namely Butterworth, to check out the trainstation there and watch the sunset on the way back.As you can see the trainstation was dead, since there are only two trains a day,one to Bangkok and one to Singapore. The sunset was beautiful and really enjoyed watching it.Once we had reached the jetty we had to wait for the bus to come. Not an unusual thing to happen, but this night was special.Malaysia’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badahwi’s action to raise the Petrol Price from 1,90RM to 2,80RM per litre the next day, although he promised not to do so until August, made every Malaysian rush to the petrol station to get “cheap petrol” before the price hike.Since there are more cars than inhabitants in Penang, the roads were jamed badly.People queued up for more than 4 hours to get to the station.I waited 2 hours for the bus to come until it finally arrived. My plan to do some shopping before the mall closes had to be cancelled since it closed shortly after our arrival.
The next day it was time to say good bye,I was heading back to KL since I wanted to send off Fanni from Hungary who was flying back home that night.Being fed up with the uncomfortable seats I’ve had so far I decided to spent twice the amount of money to get a ticket fot the “NICE Bus” to check out how nice it really is.
Besides of the stewardess being unable to speak properly(she spoke like Kevin Kuranyi),the food from Delifrance and the “free” drinks were quite cool. Not forgetting the seats (this time made in Germany by Vogel Sitze) which offered lots of space for people of my height.
After coming back from the airport, taking a deep breath before going to sleep I realised that once again I’ve had a great time in Penang, thanks to the people I can call more than friends.
End of stay camp Ipoh,Perak
Naja, was will man machen?
New pics
June 14, 2008 at 10:12 pm | Posted in Englisch/English/Bahasa Inggeris, June 2008, Uncategorized | 6 CommentsHello world,
I uploaded some new pics on Thursday, namely the one from KT,Redang and Singapore.Sorry, that you had to wait for so long, but it was worth it.You’ll agree once you see the pics. ![]()
Besides of that I wanted to enjoy a nice football match two nights ago, stayed up till 2 am just to see how a bunch of so called national players played like farmers.
Sorry guys, but it was really a weak performance,Gomez offside action were not bad,but wasted,Lehmann seemed to be more interested in the sticker on the ball than in the ball itself and Schweinsteiger equalized his quite well-done job with a little flirt with a croatian player.Respect to croatia, nice teamwork, accurate passing and although several divings this guys played nice football.
Same goes for the Romania-Italy game, wow,I didn’t expect them to do that well,I would have loved to see Italy beeing kicked out but the guy who shot the penalty seemed to be new to this topic.Anyways,it was a pleasant surprise seeing the italian struggling to score.
Today one of my uncles from Singapore was around to present one of this “miracle products”,so we had a little pottluck with friends and neighbours,..
Once the guest were gone,I discussed the way we’re going to do my farewell and the things I still have to do/want to do before I go back with my parents.
As you see,my return to Germany becomes a topic being talked about more and more every day,now that’s it’s exactly 21 days…
So long
Looking forward to the match tonight
Going for a market tomorrow early morning, besided of celebrating Father’s day somehow,..so I need to be awake,at least make it look like as if
